Vincent Van Gogh is Not Here
"Here, there is no world-renowned Vincent van Gogh, but rather hundreds of us who have experienced beautiful moments of creation at a daytime mental rehabilitation facility (community rehabilitation center)." — Curator 許乃文
Through this exhibition, we hope to engage in dialogue with the public and encourage reflection on how artistic activities can help those in mental recovery:by expressing emotions, articulating thoughts, building relationships, and even further integrating into society. The exhibition is designed around the concept of art therapy, featuring three thematic sections and a tools exhibition area. These highlight how the Community Rehabilitation Center affiliated with Kaohsiung Municipal Kai-Syuan Psychiatric Hospital fosters a safe, respectful, accepting, and supportive environment that encourages participants to engage in community and artistic creation.
Visitors will find artworks corresponding to the following themes:
-Respect for autonomy and privacy:Participants hold complete interpretive rights over their works, including the right to refuse interpretation.
-Development of personal aesthetics and traits: Participants are empowered to define their own sense of beauty, choosing their preferred media and themes.
-Acceptance of the present and reshaping relationships: The center provides an open and accepting environment that fosters positive interpersonal relationships.
Art therapy tools exhibition area: Simple tools help participants with no artistic background experience the joy of creation.
In Taiwan, the issue of care for individuals in mental recovery is periodically re-examined. However, are they the only ones who need such a supportive environment? We believe that only within inclusive and benevolent families, schools, and societies can people achieve true physical, mental, and social well-being. In a modern society where these positive factors are continuously eroded, we hope this exhibition not only shares the creative work of our participants but also raises awareness among the public about the importance of creating a "mentally and psychologically friendly home".
In 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. This exhibition aims to echo this holistic view of health by showcasing how art can contribute to the mental and emotional well-being of individuals.
